Sermon: The Rev. Jamie Barnett
Maundy Thursday begins the Great Three Days before Easter. This day receives its name from the Latin “mandatum," or the “new commandment” given by Jesus. At the Last Supper, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and commanded them to love and serve one another as he had done. The washing of feet is a central part of the Maundy Thursday liturgy. The Maundy Thursday evening service is the beginning of the “three days of Preparation” known as the Triduum.
Triduum is a period of three days of preparation for a feast day. The term is most frequently used for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, the three days prior to Easter Sunday, also the concluding days of Holy Week and known as the Easter Triduum. Another usage for the Easter Triduum reckons the days from the evening of Maundy Thursday through the evening of Easter Day. The term may indicate any three-day period of preparation for a feast.

The Great Vigil of Easter
Saturday, April 8
8:00 p.m.
Music: Schola Choir
Sermon: Karen James
The Great Vigil of Easter is the most significant liturgy of the Christian year and is the culmination of the Triduum - the Sacred Three Days. The service begins in total darkness. The Cathedral is slowly illuminated by the candles of the faithful as we observe the Paschal Mystery - the passage from darkness into light, from death into life - told through ancient texts, scriptural readings and sacred music, telling of God's saving actions through history. Into this story, we welcome those who are to baptized into the household of God, as we who witness this Sacrament and reaffirm our own baptismal vows. The great moment of this night is the celebration of the First Eucharist of the Resurrection, gloriously announced with Alleluias. You’re invited to bring bells to ring during the Gloria. The Paschal Candle burns as a sign of the presence of the resurrected Christ and will burn throughout the Easter season, known as the Great Fifty Days.Incense will be used in this service.
