Honor the Gift

Our faith calls us to care for creation because the earth, our common home, is God’s gift to all. As I ponder on how to write about Creation Care during this Christmas season, I am mindful that we are here to encourage and uplift one another. We don’t need reminders of what we “should” be doing. It is so easy to place needless expectation upon ourselves and those we love. With this in mind, how can we celebrate the season in harmony with God’s gift of creation? Take some time to pray. Invite Christ who became human just like us to replace our longing for stuff with a longing for a simple and sustainable life, and for a commitment to caring for our common home.
Here are a few ideas.
- Purchase cards from eco-friendly vendors or creatively recycle old cards.
- Try brown paper bags or newspaper for wrapping.
- Shop for gifts that are useful and sustainable gifts of experience or gifts of service, gifts of food - are they healthy and sustainable?
- Eat less, some estimates suggest that as much as 40% of Christmas food is thrown away.
